When Life Changes the Plans: A Little Grace and a Good Cup of Coffee
Share

Sometimes the best thing we can do is put down the to-do list and appreciate what's right in front of us.
Well, that certainly wasn't the weekend we had planned!
If you joined us at The Kitchen Table last week, you know we were getting ready for the North Carolina Grape Festival at Lu Mil Vineyard. We had coffee to pack, jewelry to organize, displays to prepare, and two businesses worth of supplies to somehow fit into one vehicle.
My daughter Sarah was bringing Worriless Wildflower, and I was bringing Udderly Eclucktic Coffee Co. We were excited about meeting new people, sharing our products, and handing out samples of Cowboy Blend. I'd already mentally arranged everything in that vehicle about a dozen different ways.
And then the weather forecast started changing. Sometimes life reminds us we're not nearly as in control of our schedules as we'd like to think.
Sometimes the Best Decision Is to Stay Home
As Saturday got closer, rain and wind were becoming a real concern. Coffee bags, handmade jewelry, crochet pieces, artwork, and vendor displays aren't exactly things you want blowing around a vineyard or getting soaked.
As much as we wanted to go, we decided to stay home. And I'm not going to pretend that wasn't disappointing. When you run a small business, events like these are opportunities to meet customers, introduce people to your products, and hopefully make a few sales. There's preparation involved, and sometimes money already invested.
But pushing forward simply because you've made plans isn't always the wisest decision. Sometimes the right choice is to unpack the plans before you've even packed the vehicle.
And Then Came Sunday
Saturday brought plenty of rain. By Sunday, things had become much more serious. We spent a good portion of the day dealing with tornado watches and warnings, and a tornado was confirmed nearby.
There's something about severe weather that puts everything else into perspective. You stop thinking about what you didn't get accomplished and start thinking about the people you love, whether everyone is safe, and what really matters. And you pray. Not because prayer guarantees storms will pass us by, but because we know Who we can turn to when things are beyond our control.
I'm thankful we were able to stay home, and my heart goes out to those affected by the storms.
But Friday Brought Some Wonderful News
Now, before you think the entire weekend was nothing but canceled plans and bad weather, let me tell you something wonderful: our daughter Sarah got engaged Friday!

So while one part of our weekend didn't go anything like we'd planned, another brought a whole new reason to celebrate. And suddenly, we're talking about wedding plans!
Isn't that just like life? One minute you're figuring out how to fit two businesses into one vehicle. The next, you're thinking about engagement celebrations, wedding dates, and all the exciting things ahead. I suppose our family has traded one kind of planning for another, and I couldn't be happier about this one.
We Make Plans, but God Sees the Bigger Picture
All of this reminded me of Proverbs 16:9 (CSB): “A person's heart plans his way, but the LORD determines his steps.”
I love that verse because it doesn't tell us making plans is wrong. We make grocery lists, plan meals, organize events, build businesses, prepare for holidays, and dream about what comes next. But sometimes we get so attached to the way we think things should happen that we forget our plans were never guaranteed.
That doesn't mean every disappointment is a message from God or every storm happens for a reason we can understand. It simply means that even when circumstances change, our trust in God doesn't have to.
We can be disappointed and still be thankful. We can make new plans without being defeated by the old ones. And we can recognize the blessings right in front of us, even when they arrive in the middle of an unexpected weekend.
Sometimes the Kitchen Table Is Exactly Where We Need to Be
When I started writing The Kitchen Table, I wanted it to be more than a place to talk about coffee. Of course we're going to share recipes, brewing tips, new products, and probably a few opinions about what makes a really good cup.
But I also wanted it to feel like an actual kitchen table. A place where we can talk about life, celebrate good news, admit things didn't go as planned, and remind each other to slow down.
Sometimes the best conversations happen while the coffee is brewing, the rain is falling outside, and everyone is finally home for a little while. And sometimes, instead of taking our kitchen table on the road, we discover that staying right where we are is exactly what we needed.
So What's Next?
Well, the coffee isn't going anywhere! Our coffees and teas are available online, we're still looking forward to upcoming events, and I've got more Kitchen Table recipes, brewing tips, and ideas to share.
For now, I'm going to enjoy a good cup of Cowboy Blend, celebrate some wonderful family news, and be thankful for the ordinary moments that sometimes turn out to be anything but ordinary.
Life doesn't always go according to our plans. Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the ones we never saw coming.
Until next time, pull up a chair. There's always room at The Kitchen Table.
